Photography Review: 2011

2011 has been a crazy year! I graduated from UCLA, got a job, moved cities and got my own apartment. 2011 was also a big year for my photography. Having the opportunity to photograph so many gorgeous, happy, brave and inspiring people was fantastic!!! I learned something from every shoot. It was a blast getting to know everyone.

Here are some of the photos I took in 2011:

Okay, so I didn’t take that last photo. My sister did. But it is my favorite pic of me this year, at my graduation. I can not wait to see what 2012 brings!

Group Graduation Shoot

UCLA’s graduation is this Friday!!! Everyone’s excited or stressed (because they are still taking finials).  Good luck to everyone and I can’t wait to celebrate with you all on Friday!!!

This weekend I had a great shoot with a group of seniors. I knew one of them from my building last year and the other three where new friends! We had so much fun taking photos. We took some photos out by Royce Hall, in one of the campus gardens and out by the library. I hope they all like their photos and go on to many great things!!!

Graduation Shoot: Holly C-W

I have been so busy this weekend with graduation shoots and my LAST paper EVER!!!! But I’m so happy that I was able to shoot so much recently. Thank you to everyone who has booked a shoot.

Holly is a history major and a graduating senior! She is a Star Wars fan (I’m a Star Trek fan…) but we can both agree that Harry Potter is the best thing ever! Holly booked this shoot with me because she wanted to surprise her parents with a graduation gift. She wants to give her mom some photos :-) I think this is the cutest idea in the world.

Congratulations Holly! Good luck after graduation!!!

Holly quickly told me that her favorite spot on campus was the Sculpture Garden. So we went and shot there. I was very excited for the change in venue!

My Life In iPod Photos: Part II

Cameras are everywhere these days. They are on your phone, computer, ipad and ipod. And people take pictures of everything! These photos are of the little things we do or see. They are not as big and flashy as a photo shoot. But I think, ipod photos are a more honest portrait of our lives. I take photos of building I see when I walk home everyday. I might do this because I like how the light is hitting the windows or because I think the building is interesting. I take photos of funny posters or graffiti. I basically take photos of things that I see in my everyday life.

So here is my life in ipod photos (well, the last four months of my life).

Above is the view from my apartment buildings roof. I go up there to read sometimes. Below is a billboard on campus. It was during the Bruin Week…when high school seniors who were accepted to the school come and visit.

Below is something I saw on the way to class. Someone wrote it on the stair case railing. I thought it was really petty.

Below is a picture of the oath I had to take for work :-)

And of course below is my graduation sash and graduation tickets!

17 Senior Photos Tips

I’ve thought a lot recently about what makes a “good senior portrait.” I’m thinking about this as both a photographer and a soon-to-be graduate of UCLA.  Naturally I decided to make a list of what makes a good senior portrait! Even if you don’t choose me for your photographer, I hope this list helps you out when you take your senior photos!

Graduation Shoot 2011: Mac Tan, Becca Barrett Photography

  1.  Research and talk with your photographer before the shoot. Have a good relationship with your photographer. Be friends!!!
  2.  Make sure the photographers style of editing is something you like.
  3. Wear comfortable clothes!
  4. Wear clothes that make you feel pretty/cool.
  5. Pick several outfit changes!
  6. Bring your graduation robes :-)
  7. Don’t get a new hair cut or fake tan right before the shoot. (You want to be comfortable with how you look …and really who wants to look like an oomp-loompa?)
  8. Pick a place to shoot that means something to you. Think about your school, favorite local hang out spot, etc.
  9. Do your make-up and make yourself feel pretty :-) You will be so much more relaxed at the shoot!
  10. Bring a friend…bring a whole cheer squad. Just make sure the people you bring are supportive and help you relax.
  11. Listen to pump-up music in the car ride over to the shoot location (think Rocky theme song…duna da, duna da)
  12. Practice smiling in the mirror before the shoot.
  13. Bring props! Bring a football, a flute, your ipod…heck bring your pet bunny if you want! Bring items that show who you are and make you comfortable.
  14. Remember it’s okay to be silly
  15. Please don’t wear all white or all black…
  16. on that note…wearing lots of color tends to look really good!
  17. Work with your photographer to not only get prints of your photos but also get digital copies. They will make awesome facebook profile pictures!

Graduation Shoot: Mac Tan

Mac was my Resident Assistant last year and he really helped me adjust to life at UCLA. Over that year he became a really good friend of mine. Mac is really one of the happiest, smartest and most helpful people I know. I was thrilled when he asked me to take graduation photos for him!

Mac will be graduating from UCLA with a degree in Political Science.

Thank you.

I’m a sending out graduation notifications and thank you cards…thus this quote seemed fitting:

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.  ~John Fitzgerald Kennedy
